DOHA: Collective efforts under Tarsheed programme have brought significant results in terms of rationalising the consumption utilities in Qatar.

The consumption of both water and electricity in June 2018 witnessed a double-digit decline compared to the corresponding month last year.

The demand of water in June declined by 14.1 percent and electricity by 11.1 percent compared to figures for the same month in 2017.

The total consumption of water in June 2018 stood at 38,100.5 thousand cubic metres (1000m³) and electricity at 3845.4 Gigawatt hours (GWh) against 44,340.0 (1000m³) and 4323.2(GWh), according to latest official data released by the Ministry of Development, Planning and Statistics.

However, when compared on month-on-month basis (m-o-m) the water consumption in June declined by 5.2 percent compared to May 2018, but electricity demand witnessed an increase of 16.1 percent, which is a normal phenomenon understandably as consumers use air-conditions more extensively with the rise in mercury levels.

The consumption of water in May 2018 was 40,181.4(1000m³) and electricity 3311.2(GWh).

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), the distributor of water and electricity in the country, under its ‘National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency’ (Tarsheed), in line of the Qatar Development Strategy 2018-22, has set a target to reduce per-capita electricity and water consumption to eight percent and 15 percent, respectively.

The programme, which was launched way back in 2012, succeeded in reducing the per capita consumption of electricity and water in Qatar by 17 percent and 18 percent, respectively, reduce carbon emissions by 10.2 million tonnes, saving 265 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Tarsheed is also providing technical support to a number of projects in the country to produce 500MW – 700MW from renewable resources. The various initiatives helped save QR5bn over the last six years.
