Hamad International Airport set to implement advanced security system
The new system is part of an ambitious Smart Passenger Project being implemented in collaboration with HIA and Airport Passports Department which allows passengers to complete all procedures through an electronic system without any human element. Passengers pass through scanning machines, complete travel procedures, weigh and register the luggage and take boarding pass and use e-gate to board the flight.
Scanning machines and CCTV cameras are being set up at the entrances and exits of the Airport to be connected to the control room of the Department. The patrol mobiles and foot patrol are being increased to ensure quick response in case any forbidden items are detected.
“The new system aims at ensuring the safety and security of the passengers and civil aviation, and to make travel safer,” Brigadier Essa Arar Al Rumaihi, Director of Airport Security Department, said in an interview with police magazine Al Shurta Maak (Police with You).
“Several new machines are being installed inside the Airport to ensure safety and security as well as fast track the movement of the passengers by reducing queues of passengers getting inside the airport,” said Al Rumaihi. These machines are first time to be used at HIA and in the world. Meant for scanning passengers and their bags, the scanners are equipped with cameras to detect prohibited items. The security personnel at HIA have been given training in operating the machines.
To speed up scanning procedures at security check post in the airport, the boxes containing the passenger’s personal belongings will pass automatically. The automated system will allow more passengers to pass through than the manual way. Larger inspection tables are being set up to give more times for scanning of bags accurately.
“Very high-tech machines are being installed at HIA to detect hazardous materials and weapons accurately,” said Major Ali Hamad Al Hajzab, Head of the Security Unit at the Department.
“The scanning machines can detect the explosive materials and other prohibited items. The new machines will increase the efficiency of the operation and capacity of the movements of the passengers at arrival and departure terminals,” said Al Hanzab.
The Department is enhancing the security of HIA by installing advanced security system of international standards,” said Major Khalid bin Abdurrahman Al Thani, Head of Technical Unit.
The system for the safety of civil aviation requires advanced technology therefore, the Department installed several new CCTV cameras to safeguard the premises of the Airport, said Al Thani.
