If you want to be happier in your life, what should you do? Experts aren’t short of ideas. A quick google will find psychologists, coaches and other assorted gurus suggesting you practice gratitude, meditate, exercise, get out in nature, establish more social connections, forgive your nemesis, etc. etc. etc.

All of which is more than a little daunting. With such an important aim and with so much advice floating around, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and give up before you start. But as with every audacious goal, the way to get over the fear is to get going with baby steps.

So which of the incredibly long list of happiness tips should you start with? UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center wants to help. The clearinghouse for fascinating new research in positive psychology helpfully puts together a calendar each month giving you a link a day to a research-backed happiness practice. By trying out a new practice each day, you can start to feel out which have the most impact and are most practical for your life.

A month isn’t too little to start noticing real benefits either. While habits can take more time than you’d think to fully solidify, month-long resets have proven successful for people trying to do everything from rethink their social media habits to improve their diet. So get started now and see how much happier just one tiny action a day can make you by the end of July.
