Technicians can now apply for driving licence

Doha: The General Directorate of Traffic has announced that the profession of a technician is now eligible to apply for Qatar Driving licence.

The driving schools said that they had been informed about it but not received any official letter. Mohamed Al Zain Ibrahim, Executive Manager, Gulf Driving School, said: “This news was in circulation for the last few days and it is correct. But, the school has yet not received any official letter in this regard from the General Directorate of Traffic. The existence of a police section at every driving school may be the resaon behind non sending of an official letter.”

“Until now, our school has received one applicant from the same profession and we have allowed him to apply,” he added.

Another driving school director said that the school had received information from the General Directorate of Traffic that the profession of technician was now eligible to apply for driving school. In the end of 2017, some job categories had been declared ineligible for light-vehicle licences. This was done as part of a national strategy to address traffic congestion.

General Directorate of Traffic had said that the ban on some job categories to get licence was a temporary measure and would be lifted once infrastructure projects were completed.

Major General Muhammad Saad Al Kharji, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic, in an earlier interview said that once the construction of roads are completed, the banned professions will be allowed to apply for driving licences. The job categories that are still barred from securing a driving licence include grocer, newspaper vendor, barber, servant, cosmetologist, security guard, porter, shepherd, butcher, tailor, goldsmith, agricultural worker, decoration technician, mining technician, beautician and mechanic etc.
