Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Fish Wealth Department, opened yesterday a ‘fish section’ at Al Shahaniya farmers’ market, which offers fresh vegetables from Thursday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm.
According to the information provided by the officials associated with the matter, the fish section is prepared to accommodate a number of outlets so the fishermen can display their products. The facility is equipped with the necessary things like refrigerators, separate area for cleaning fish and veterinary doctors to check the fish offered for sale etc.
The agricultural strategy of Qatar aims at increasing local products like as vegetables, dates, red meat, poultry, eggs, fish, milk and green fodder, taking into consideration the preservation of the natural resources in the country and work to make good use of them.
As per an available report, farmers’ markets have achieved record sales as they offer fresh local products such as vegetables, fish, birds, municipal eggs, dairy and livestock on competitive prices to consumers.
According to the officials concerned, the idea of farmers’ markets is to support farmers and fishers by reducing their marketing costs, stimulating local production, and encouraging small or non-productive farms to turn into productive
