Katara's popularity soared in 2019

The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) emerged as one of the popular destinations in Qatar, as it attracted not only local residents but also thousands of tourists from across the globe.

The number of visitors coming to Katara saw a significant rise of 27 percent in 2019. According to Cultural Index 2019, over 10.03 million people visited Katara last year, compared to 7.9 million in 2018.

The popularity of Katara also increased among tourists as their number also witnessed an increase during the year. More than 80,464 tourists visited Katara in 2019, compared to 76,058 tourists in 2018, reflecting a rise of around six percent.

World-class and highly entertaining activities organised throughout the year played a crucial role pulling the crowd. The number of events and activities organised during the year reached 1,518 during the last year compared to 1,140 activities held in 2018.

Katara hosted 31 cultural and heritage festival, including the Katara Traditional Dhow Festival, the Halal Qatar Festival, Senyar Festival, and Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition. In addition to hosting several global festivals, Katara also hosted many local events such as Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha celebrations, which were a big hit among locals and tourists.

The index showed that over 3.33 million vehicles entered Katara last year. Katara Beach witnessed 144,457 visitors while 24,448 students visited Katara.

With regard to events, Katara hosted and organised 31 festivals, and 178 art exhibitions that showcased 6,965 artworks by 1,007 artists. It screened 146 movies, hosted 70 concerts and 117 ceremonies and gatherings. It also hosted 84 lectures and 54 Islamic activities, organised 58 competitions, played host and organiser to 25 sports activities, presented 190 workshops with 607 sessions, and conducted 10 auctions and 41 bazaars.

The online presence of Katara was also very strong as thousands of people engaged with it on social media. More than 1.47 million visitors browsed its website during the year.

It social media platform remained busy, as number of followers on Facebook reached 1.17 million, while the number of followers on Instagram reached 212,811 during the year. The number of followers on twitter reached 403,876 in 2019.

The cultural index for the year 2019 indicates Katara’s achievement, activities and events held during the year. The index covers events, activities and achievements from the beginning of January to December 31, 2019. It is issued every three months, four times a year, in the form of quarterly reports in order to monitor the achievements of Katara during a year.
