Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Engineering Department, in collaboration with the Health Professions Awareness and Volunteering Programme, organised a training workshop for students from local secondary schools and universities at HMC facilities.
The workshop, held from July 5 to 11, was designed to help promote different types of support service careers available at HMC, such as electrical and electronics engineering.
Organised for the seventh consecutive year, the programme saw the participation of 27 trainees who were provided with an overview of the role of engineering services in a hospital and specifically the role of engineering in the delivery of safe and effective patient care. The workshop also included visits to support services facilities at HMC, including the kitchen, laundry, and other administrative sections.

Abdulla al-Kubaisi, head of training and development, Engineering Department, HMC said promoting an early interest in healthcare careers among young people is an important strategy for addressing the global health professional shortage.
“As part of this workshop, we provided trainees with an overview of the duties and responsibilities of engineers and technicians who are currently working at our three Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City hospitals – Qatar Rehabilitation Institute, the Ambulatory Care Center, and Women’s Wellness and Research Center,” said al-Kubaisi
“The Engineering Department is keen to promote the important role we play in providing safe, high-quality healthcare and we regularly speak to secondary school and university students as part of expos and job fairs that are aimed at providing young people with the information they need when planning for their future career,” al-Kubaisi added.

Students who participated in the workshop expressed their satisfaction with the programme and described it as informative and inspiring. They said the workshop provided them with insight into how various engineering disciplines and support services are essential to running healthcare facilities, including during times of disaster and emergencies.
At the end of the programme, certificates of attendance were distributed at a ceremony held at the main auditorium of the Engineering Department at Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City.
