Experts discuss ways to combat cybercrime

Doha: To benefit from the best expertise and techniques to confront cybercrime, the Institute of Criminal Studies at the Public Prosecution organised a seminar on combating cybercrime

The five-day event, that began yesterday, is being organised in collaboration with the School of Justice of France. The institution is planning to organise a similar seminar later in Paris.

“Cyber security is one of the most prominent issues in the modern times, no country is immune to this threat because of the high dependence on modern technology and electronic systems that have become the target of piracy, infiltration, and cross-border crimes,” Attorney-General H E Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri said.

The cooperation with French side began in 2004 in Doha, and continue through the signing of the last two judicial cooperation agreements in 2015 to organise the major sports event courses. The latest agreement was signed in March in the field of combating cybercrime and terrorism, Al Marri pointed out.

He also said at a press conference held at the Public Prosecution headquarters in the presence of the Ambassador of France to Qatar, Franck Gellet and other officials that the subject of this seminar is one of the most important issues facing the world today because of the speed of technology and high-technology that must be learned to reduce the phenomenon of these crimes and address them.

Franck Gellet said the legal and judicial cooperation between France and Qatar has witnessed great progress in the past five years due to strong relations between the State of Qatar and the French Republic.

He also said that the benefit of joint expertise is very important, especially since cyber crimes are issues that require close cooperation. “France and Qatar have worked together in the legal field for a long time, and every year we are conducting seminars on specific issues. For the past five years, we have been working especially on legal and sports issues. The good preparation for World Cup is not only technical but also include legal preparation,” Gellet told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event.

Officials from Public Prosecution, Police and Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy are attending the seminar and will learn how to address legally the problems of cyber attacks. “This is something we have to work ahead to make sure that we have good preparation when the event starts,” added the ambassador.

Replying to the question whether more such seminars would be organised in future, the ambassador said, “This seminar is being held in Doha for a week, and later in the year it will be followed by an additional one that will be held in Paris.”
