Construction activities in Qatar remain stable

Building and construction activities in Qatar during the last months of the 2018 remained stable reaffirming the resilience of the local economy despite challenges. Some 677 new building permits were issued in December 2018 which was almost the same when compared to the 679 new building permits issued in the previous month.

As far as the building completion certificates are concerned, this indicator also remained almost unchanged in December. Some 328 building completion certificates were issued in the month of December against 329 in October 2018, latest official data released by Planning and Statistics Authority show.

Data on building permits and building completion certificates is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.

When compared to their geographical distribution, Al Rayyan Municipality stood at the top among all the municipalities where the number of building permits issued were 200 permits, accounting for 30 percent of the total issued permits, while Al Wakrah Municipality came in second place with 156 permits, i.e. 23 percent , followed by Doha Municipality with 119 permits (18 percent ), then Al Da’ayen municipality with 69 permits, i.e.10 percent . The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Umm Slal 48 permits (7 percent), Al Sheehaniya 36 permits (5 percent), Al Shamal 25 permits (4 percent ), and finally Al Khor 24 permits (4 percent).

In terms of type of permits issued, data indicates that the new building permits (residential and nonresidential) constitutes 54 percent (368 permits) of the total building permits issued during the month of December 2018, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 42 percent (286 permits), and finally fencing permits with 3 percent (23 permits).

Among all the new residential buildings permits issued in December 2018, villas top the list accounting for 50 percent (145 permits), followed by dwellings of housing loans permits by 38 percent (110 permits) and apartments buildings by 6 percent (17 permits). On the other hand, commercial buildings were found to be in the forefront of non-residential buildings permits with 38 percent (30 permits), followed by industrial buildings e.g. workshops and factories with 32 percent (25 permits).

When analysing data on building completion certificates issued during the month of December 2018, according to their geographical distribution, Al Rayyan Municipality comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building completion certificates issued were 94 certificates accounting for 29 percent of the total issued certificates while municipality of Doha came in second place with 72 certificates, or 22 percent, followed by Al Wakrah Municipality with 55 certificates (17 percent ), then Al Da’ayen municipality with 49 certificates (15 percent).

The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Umm Slal 30 certificates (9 percent ), Al Khor 11 certificates (3 percent ), Al Sheehaniya 10 certificates (3 percent ), and finally Al Shamal 7 certificates (2 percent).

In terms of type of certificates issued, data indicates that the new building completion certificates (residential and non-residential) constitutes 74 percent (244 certificates) of the total building certificates issued during the month of December 2018, while the percentage of additions certificates constituted 26 percent (84 certificates).
