The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the body responsible for delivering the infrastructure required to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, announced the completion of turf laying of Al Wakrah Stadium, one of eight that will host the World Cup finals.
In a tweet Friday, the SC said: “Our team has broken the record for the fastest turf laying of a football pitch…completing it in just 9 hours 15 minutes!” It added that the previous record was 13 hours 15 minutes, held by Khalifa International Stadium.
In the space of just 13 and a half hours, the pitch measuring around 7,800 square meters was moved from the SC and Aspire Zone Foundation Turf Nursery and laid down inside the historic venue by a team of 40 specialists on site.

The record improved the previous best set by the team who worked on Al Sadd Sports Club’s stadium in 2016, finishing the process in just 14 hours and 40 minutes.
The boldly futuristic shape of the 40,000 capacity arena, Al Wakrah Stadium will host matches through to the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, also mirrors the innovative, ambitious spirit of this place.
Al Wakrah Stadium is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2019 as part of Qatar’s preparations for the World Cup, which runs from November 21 to December 18.
