Best Budget Supermarkets in Qatar

Making money isn’t easy and particularly when you are an expat working in Qatar, every single penny counts. Most expats take on average a salary of QR2500 per month and given that Qatar is becoming increasingly expensive each passing day, the said salary may not be enough to sustain you in the country, unless you manage your finances well.

There are some costs that you cannot avoid such as rent and food; however, there are other ways of saving money. Today we bring you a list of super-market where you can buy all of your daily necessities at fair and low prices:
  • Carrefour – is a French hypermarket, which has built a reputation for itself for always providing discounts and other promotional offers. The supermarket literally offers everything that one can think of in terms of daily necessities. To avoid confusion it is advisable to browse the online store and make a list before you head into the store. Carrefour currently has five branches in Qatar, these being at City Center, Villaggio, Landmark, Mall of Qatar, and Al Wakrah. Carrefour has additional branches in Ezdan Mall, Lagoona, Dar Alsalam, and Al Mirqab as well. The hypermarket remains open from 8 in the morning to 12 in the night from Saturday to Thursday; on Fridays the stores open from 8 am to 11 am and then re-open at 12:30 am until 12 in the morning.

  • LuLu – The LuLu supermarket chain has become a household name in Qatar. The UAE based LuLu Group is one the most successful and highly diversified consumer business groups in the Gulf region. LuLu has established its presence in the field of supermarkets, department stores and hypermarkets all over the GCC countries and presently the group operates over 100 shopping malls and hypermarkets. The group also owns export and re-export houses, meat processing plants, garment manufacturing units and IT training institutes. The group prides itself in having a multi-ethnic workforce of 38,400, comprising 37 nationalities and serves about 650,000 shoppers daily in the Gulf region and realises an annual turnover of $6bn globally. , the hypermarket features a fresh food section, a departmental store, electronics section, home appliances and even a stationary corner. The hypermarket promises to deliver the ‘fairest’ prices to its customers and at the same time deliver world class brands and product lines designed to meet each and every need of the people of the area. The outlet also has its own dedicated parking space for the convenience of the shoppers. The LuLu Group has added the number of its outlets in Qatar to 7 with the opening of a new outlet at Al Messila in Doha, near Fariq bin Omran recently. It is worth mentioning that LuLu Group is planning to open four more outlets in Qatar within a span of a year, the group is investing QR500 million to realise the opening of these new outlets, one of which will be in Muaither.

  • Family Food Centre– is a smaller chain of supermarket that has four branches in Qatar at Frij Al Nasr, Rayyan Road, Airport Road and Al Kheesa respectively. The store was established in 1978 and today boasts of three large stores spread over an area of 50, 000 sq. ft. each. The stores open at 7:30 AM to Midnight (Saturday-Thursday), 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM to 11:00 PM (Friday) except for Al Kheesa Branch, which opens at 9:00 AM to Midnight (Saturday-Thursday) and 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM (Friday).

Other places where you can buy fresh groceries for low prices are small family run stores and most importantly the farmer markets that are organised under the patronage of the Qatari Government.
